A VIRTUAL 5K RUN/WALK AND 1-MILE FAMILY FUN RUN TO SUPPORT THE ASBMR FUND FOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION!
May is Osteoporosis Month! Every year, more Americans are diagnosed with osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to weaken and become more likely to break. You may not know that you have this “silent” disease until your bones are so weak that a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes your wrist to break or your hip to fracture. Learn the facts so you can protect your bones!
Many people believe:
• Osteoporosis is a natural part of aging that only affects older women.
• Bone loss can’t be treated once it starts.
• The only risk of osteoporosis is broken bones from falls.
None of these myths are true. What’s true is:
• While 1 in 2 women over 50 will develop osteoporosis, 1 in 4 men will, too.
• It’s possible to make bones stronger.
• Around 25 % of people die within the first 6 to 12 months after a hip fracture.
On behalf of National Osteoporosis Month, the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education is holding it's Second Annual Virtual 5k Fun/Run/Walk/Ride/Roll from May 1 - May 31, 2022.
ASBMR is the premier professional, scientific and medical society established to promote excellence in bone, mineral and musculoskeletal research, and facilitate the translation of that research into clinical practice. Funding cutbacks have left our community with a tremendous need for alternative sources to fund cutting-edge research. Without it, many important discoveries will be delayed and progress will be deferred in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and related bone, mineral and musculoskeletal disorders, including rare bone diseases. The ASBMR Fund for Research and Education is supported by individual donations and provides research grants and training opportunities for basic and clinical young investigators in the bone, mineral and musculoskeletal field.
Our research community needs your support; 100% of your gift will be used to support research and the development of the next generation of researchers in our field, just like Randee Hunter.
WHAT IS A VIRTUAL RUN/WALK?
A Virtual Run is a 5K that can be completed in your own country, your own neighborhood, at a local park, or even on the treadmill. You can run, walk, ride or roll! Sign up, gather some friends, decide on a route, and get out and move! The best part is, you'll know that each step you take is helping the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education support Young Investigators!
